Miss Kittin & The Hacker - "Party In My Head" (Thieves Like Us Remix)
We're very excited to hear that Thieves Like Us have a new EP out. Really Like To See You Again was released June 9, and from what we hear, it continues the hot streak their album, Play Music, set them out on.
Their label asked us nicely not to post anything from the EP, and so we're going to do the next best thing: offer you a remix off Miss Kittin and the Hacker's
latest single, "Party In My Head." The "Heart of Glass"-esque drum programming at the beginning is Kittin's, but the Paradise Garage-y bobs and churns? That's all Thieves, right there.

Mochipet - "Marshall Bass Stacks"
The Microphone Tour Jams were some of our favorite secret weapons of last year. Conceived of as warm-up fodder for Bay Area producer Mochipet's tours, they were dense and intense amalgamations of electro house, hyphy, ghetto-tech, Southern rap, and more.
We fantasized about a more official release of the stuff, and now something very similar has come into being: Master P on Atari. A pummeling, deadly face-melt of an album, this shit is like Megasoid on steroids, or Two Fingers filled with an insatiable bloodlust. All your eardrum are belong to us.

Terry Lynn & Johan Hugo - "Jamaican Girls"
As all you GBH regulars know, we're thrilled that companies are starting to commission music to promote their brands. Ventures like Green Label Sounds and the Scion A/V Series give us unimpeachably good music at an impossibly good price (read: free), and we see this as one of many ways to keep the music business alive.
The good people at Red Stripe are now getting in on the action, and their debut album, It Was Written, is designed to shed light on the wonderful influence Jamaican music has had on the world. This, the first of several tracks that Red Stripe's giving away for free (check here for the other four), is a bumping, muscular summer jam, full of deep bass, bright keyboard stabs, blurting sirens, and superb vocals by one of Jamaica's rising stars, Terry Lynn. Drink it in, and drink deep.

GBH Radio Episode 22: MASSIVE!
This week's episode is a doozy. After listening to last week's show a little, Max decided he's totally sick of listening to disco and boogie, and vowed to come back to house and techno. The results, which feature new work by Hugg and Pepp, Renaissance Man, Yuksek and Brodinski plus championship-caliber choons by Laidback Luke and A-Trak, Booka Shade, Calvin Harris, and Idiotproof, are strong as hell, even though Max decided it would be hi-la-rious to bust out his Pete Tong impression on the air. (E-mail him and tell him that it's really not that funny)
Sam, just for the sake of balance, showed a bit of his softer side, mixing Sammy Bananas' mix of Passion Pit's "The Reeling", Fred Falke's mix of Grizzly Bear's "Two Weeks" and the massive Thin White Duke mix of Sneaky Sound System "It's Not My Problem" into a big nasty stew of bass fury (Dolby Anol) and ghetto house (Rye Rye).

King Jaffe Joffer - The Indestructible Beat, Volume One
The 33Hz guys are working overtime these days. In addition to resuscitating their Dither Down label (home of the immortal Paris, Texas!) and writing new material, Tim and his pal DJ Chicus have started up a new production team called King Jaffe Joffer. No word on whether they plan on dressing up like James Earl Jones in Coming to America when they play out (please, Jesus, let them do that), but if this mix is any indication, they do plan to play lots of bonking, exotic, diaspora dance music: South Rakkas Crew, Yellowman, Bonde do Role, Edu K, Buraka Som Sistema, etc.
Hey Major Lazer: if you're still looking for opening groups for your tour, look no further.

White Lies - "Nothing to Give" (M83 Remix)
White Lies are not a band that remixes easily. Their music is so brooding, Harry McVeigh's voice and lyrics so dark and angsty, that both will cut right through your standard 4/4 blog-house treatment.
The only solution, of course, is to find a remixer capable of going pound for pound with White Lies in the drama department, an artist whose stock and trade is also teenage melodrama. Someone like M83, for example. That would work really well.

Little Boots - "Remedy" (Esser Dub)
Well, now you can cross "dubstep" off the list of things Esser doesn't do. That leaves sword juggling, rhinoplasty, and some really unspeakably disgusting sexual acts, but really, that's it. Quite a short list.
Anyway, as you'd expect from Esser, this takes Little Boots's "Remedy" and turns it into something shuddering and nasty...but not too shuddering and nasty. Awesome.

Fenech-Soler - "LA Love"
Back when we heard that Alan Braxe was going to start putting out music by *gasp* bands through his label, Vulture Music, we were a little surprised. Vulture is supposed to be about Alan Braxe and Fred Falke! Epic, dreamy filter disco, not whiny smelly indie rock!
Turns out we should've thought this through a little better. Fenech-Soler, a quartet from King's Cliffe in England, would probably make beelines for the same used electro-funk singles at a record store as Dave 1, and, in all likelihood, fight desperately over them.

Esser - "Long Arms"
It seems like this new Esser album could sound like a million different things. The first song he released, "Satisfied" had a strangely Specials-y quality to it, and this, a freebie his new U.S. label, Chocolate Industries, is giving away, sounds like a slightly more under control Jamie T. So, to recap, the new Esser album could be really awesome, or really fun, or really great.

Well, the kids today have an anthem now.
The aptly titled "F@#& Work", by Cubic Zirconia, the mercurial Nick Hook's latest project, is like Simian Mobile Disco's "Hustler" crammed into a washing machine filled with sweat-crusted acid house, disco, and post-punk, and we expect to be hearing it out a lot.
It isn't getting its official release until June 23, but when it does, it'll come with a buttload of remixes, including work by Dam Funk, Nacho Lovers, Dekker & Johan, and this nasty piece of work by our boy Dances With White Girls.

Kid Cudi - "Dat New New" (VIKING Remix)
PJ the Viking is ascendant. Ever since we found this Virginia-based producer a few months ago, we figured he would be a slow builder, someone who would take a while to make a name for himself.
Why, you ask? Well, it's simple, really. PJ is one of those rare finds, a producer with great compositional chops as well as a killer pop instinct, and, um, people, don't like that..?
Wait, let's start again.
When producers pay as much attention to song craft as they do to their sound design and their hooks, then, um, they take a long time to become popular. Because their songs are awesome, and people don't always like awesome songs...hmmm...
Whatever. It made sense at the time!

Thank God for Duke Dumont. Dude keeps his head down, stays on his game, and the results are pretty uniformly incredible: "Hoy"? That "Run It" remix? The "Two Doors Down" reconstruction? Lindstrom & Prins Thomas's II comes out today, and believe us when we tell you that it is one of the best disco records you're going to hear all year. Hell, we'll go one further and say it puts pretty much everything else they've done together to shame. We hope Rye Rye knows how lucky she is. As one of the first signees to M.I.A.'s N.E.E.T. label, the girl gets some real international exposure; the first single off her forthcoming album, Go! Pop! Bang!, has remixes by Portugal's Buraka Som Sistema and, uh, Philly's DJ Sega.

Chairlift - "Evident Utensil" (The Juan Maclean Remix)
Sometimes I think that Juan Maclean takes on remix work only when the song has the right lyrics. And we're not talking about an entire song here, mind you. We're just talking about a snippet, a single phrase that can be turned into a mantra. On Matthew Dear's "Pom Pom," Maclean took the phrase "I've got to figure out love" out to the ends of the acid-drenched cosmos, and here, he the line "How high must I try for you?" and turns it into a mind-expanding incantation, as synth blurts and klaxons pulse for what seems like forever. Lady Sovereign - "I Got You Dancing" (Young Live Remix)
We think Sov's record label was a little bit hasty to get "I Got You Dancing" out there. Between the public's exhaustion with autotuning and Sov's looming comeback tour dates in both England and America looming, her people rightly assumed that something had to be out there, and album mini-mixes weren't going to cut it.
But really, if they'd held out a little longer, they could've gotten hold of some stronger remixes. The mixes by Semothy Jones and Jack Beats are pretty lame, but this busy piece by Young Live, with its "Blue Monday"-referencing synth line, clanging chimes,
and relentless beats, is pretty awesome. And we'll take pretty awesome over pretty lame any day of the week.

Amanda Blank - "Might Like You Better"
XXXChange knows how to treat a girl right. Dude gave Allison Mosshart's vocals a little more pop on the Kills' Midnight Boom, put Kid Sister on the map with "Control" and "Get Fresh" (though her squeeze, A-Trak, co-produced both), and now he's batting lead-off in the campaign for the long-awaited Amanda Blank debut. The thing's out in July on Downtown Records, and here, XXXChange drops Amanda's legendarily dirty mouth into a minefield of kick-and-cymbal punches, synth pokes and prickles. Hottt!

Project Pat - "Keep It Hood" (Bird Peterson Remix)
Bird Peterson is just like you and me. Despite being impossibly ahead of the competition down in Texas, dude still listens to the stuff the rest of us listen to: Philly soul, southern rap, arena rock, old blues. A lot of blog-house DJs will keep that kind of thing to themselves, but Bird brings it right up to the fore. So when he decides to remix Project Pat's "Keep It Hood," he fortifies that whomping, funky bassline with some O'Jays goodness. Delicious, and nutritious!

Major Lazer featuring Andy Milonakis - "Zumbi"
That Diplo is some kind of viral marketing genius. Months ago, before the blogosphere even knew what Major Lazer was, the Mad Decent boys released this bit of tomfoolery and let it run its course. People giggled, people gasped, Switch buried his head in his hands, but it certainly stuck in people's heads. So when this apparently real track surfaced a few days ago, blog nerds expecting Andy Milonakis jiggling along to Fela Kuti got a bouncing, zapping surprise: Andy Milonakis talking nonsense into an autotuner, with robotic dancehall bounce behind him. This is a red flag everybody is going to be talking about.

DOOM - "Gazillion Ear" (Thom Yorke Remix)
How cool is it that DOOM is on Lex?! One of the quirkiest, most original voices in independent hip hop on arguably the best international hip hop label of all time? There'll be those who say that Daniel Dumile belongs on an American label, dammit, but while you listen to this remix, consider the possibilities that this marriage offers:
Does Rhymesayers make this happen? What about SRC? Anticon? They might all understand the urge to do something like this, to surround this song, so disillusioned by the pursuit of fame, with blurred, dazed piano, staticy hi-hats, and chilling Yorke coos, and in so doing, turn DOOM's vocals into the voice that rattles around inside one's own head. But would they make it happen? Didn't think so.

K.I.M. - "Party Machini" (Tomboy Remix)
When we interviewed Kim Moyes last year, it sounded like he and his musical partner Julian Hamilton were going to be a little more sensible about their touring schedule in 2009. See, the Presets practically toured themselves into the ground back in 2006, and the band didn't sound too keen on doing that again.
But here we are in 2009, and they're touring like mad again. The Presets' North American tour kicks off today, and as soon as they're finished here, they're going for a victory lap in Australia. We fear for their health, obviously, but there are selfish reasons for it. What if there was no more K.I.M.? How would we do without this stuff?

Nite Club - "Eff $"
Nite Club's debut album, the delicate, but surprising My Tronic, is coming out on Tape Theory on April 6, and we're pretty geeked about the whole thing. Max will be interviewing him on East Village Radio next week, and there's a lot to talk about: dude went to composition school with Dan Deacon, he used to play in a live drum and bass band, and, as "Eff $" illustrates, he's one of those rare talents who can make dance music do anything. Over a deft, improbably tidy mix of house-y piano and bubbling breaks, Richard Spitzer sings to a special someone with the same vulnerability as Jeremy Greenspan. It'll move your feet and make you swoon.

Fever Ray - "Triangle Walks" (Tiga's 1-2-3-4 Mix)
Man, thank god we found this. Even though Fever Ray is absolutely not a dance record, we'd secretly been hoping that people would step up and turn Karin Dreijer Andersson's spooky songs into dangerous, dark dance epics. We were thinking Trentemoller, or Radio Slave, or even someone like Matthew Dear.
But we were hoping so desperately for something dark and scary that we forgot about something. Compelling or not, Andersson's lyrics are still really fucking weird, and that's perfect for someone like Tiga, who turns "Triangle Walks" something that's half Scandinavian house, half trap rap beat. 1-2-3-4, indeed.

Mikix the Cat - "Movin' Around"
Trouble and Bass started out as a big, fuck-off heavy bass label. Their first releases, which involved people like Math Head, Starkey, and label founder Drop the Lime, were big, wobbly, nasty pieces of work, and they were in a class by themselves because nobody was making ghetto music that hard.
The label tried its hand at poppier stuff for a while (see: Polyhedron), but now, after several tours of Europe, it seems they've finally found a peer in Mikix the Cat, a Parisian DJ and producer who just might be responsible for the best Trouble and Bass release yet. Pop quiz, everybody!
You are at the Winter Music Conference in Miami. You are at a party listening to Steve Angello, one of the world's biggest progressive house DJs, do his thing for just the right mix of connected sleazebags, devoted party-goers, and random thrillseekers. Do you:
a) buy some earplugs. Gotta enjoy the music responsibly!
b) find some ecstasy and take it immediately.
c) spend a little too much money at the bar, because why the hell not?
d) ask Angello to play Black Eyed Peas songs, and when he refuses, get your body guard to punch him in the face and cause a giant brawl in the DJ booth, thereby ruining everybody's evening.
If you're Paris Hilton, the choice is apparently quite obvious: D. As in, duh!

Doves - "Kingdom of Rust" (Still Going Remix)
Doves are getting their songs remixed now? Really? Do you think their manager had to sit them down and explain what a remix was? God, they must've. But if that's true, then how did he do it? Questions abound: Did he have illustrations? (Absolutely) Bizarre, unwieldy similes? (For sure) Candy? (Seems conceivable) Sock puppets? (...Yes)
We'd bet that most of those things were ineffective (yes, even the candy), but thank goodness management got Still Going to do this remix. Eric and Liz have kept the Doves' trademark grandeur intact here, with a robust bassline, shimmering guitar, and big sad vocals that make the whole thing sound like late period Depeche Mode. Miss Kittin and the Hacker - "Party In My Head"
If there's a silver lining to be found in pop culture accelerating the way it has, Miss Kittin and the Hacker are definitely part of it. Their superior debut, First Album, which came out all the way back in 2001, got hidden in the backs of CD wallets when electroclash ODed, and so the two wisely moved on, in separate directions. Fast forward about seven years, when the pair decided to do a reunion tour. Some might've seen that as a cynical cash-grab, and maybe it was. But along the way, the pair found inspiration for some new music, and their new album, Two, actually lives up to the hype that should've followed them all along. "Party In My Head" feels like Blondie's "Heart of Glass" paired with some kind of outsized New Order synths. And as an added bonus, Miss Kittin can kind of sing in tune now. Travel back in time again, like the first time.

Dan Deacon - "Wet Wings"
Did you know that Dan Deacon studied music composition at a conservatory? Strange, but true. That fact is not exactly evident in his music, which is sometimes so childish that you wonder whether it was made to express anything more than a caffeinated blurt. But every once in a while, glimmers of that training come across.
Take this track "Wet Wings," for example. Off his upcoming album, Bromst, it takes an elegant snippet of what sounds like an old spiritual and layers it into a howling, hypnotizing fugue of tongues. Aside from some small electronic skimming noises, it sounds like an impossible remastering of some scary Smithsonian Folkways field recording, and it makes the end - just the second line of that aforementioned spiritual - positively chilling.

Phoenix - "1901" (M/F's Nu Wave Mix)
To hear some tell it, Phoenix's upcoming Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is going to be a big freaking deal. The first single, which the band is giving away for free, is a bright and energetic rocker, with an adventurous vocal melody and an excellent hook, and the rest of the album is supposed to be of a similarly high caliber.
It's already getting remixed like crazy,
and as so often happens these days, the remix world is having trouble with that melody. Nobody's managed to make anything quite smooth or energetic enough, with one very important exception: Nashville's Mother/Father, who are slowly making a name for themselves in the indie rock world, decided to go as bare-bones as possible, with some simple keyboard bass and some slow dance synth chords. Play it on repeat, and pray for an extended mix.

Hot Chip - "One Pure Thought" (Robert Wyatt & Geese Version)
Once upon a time, Hot Chip made remixes. They were always something to look forward to; Joe and Alexis didn't just grab a vocal snippet and turn it into something grim and grinding. They took it upon themselves to totally reimagine the parent material, whether it was the chord changes or the lyrics and melody, and the results usually ranged from inspired to very interesting.
The band has decided that they're too busy to bother with such trifles anymore, but that attitude, apparently, lives on. This magnificent EP by the legendary Robert Wyatt and some string players known as Geese reimagines songs from Hot Chip's Made in the Dark as chamber pop, full of busy passages of pizzicato, heartbreaking violin harmonies, and most wonderfully of all, Alexis and Joe's original vocal tracks, nestled in the middle. One of the most touching, beautiful surprises we've heard in ages.

NT89 - "Delta Phelton"
Leave it to the most stylish country in the EU to create the perfect combination. The Italians are starting to figure out how to take all the aggression of breaks and electro house and inject it into the bubbling, kooky weirdness of tech-house and Nima Tahmasebi, a.k.a. NT89, is the latest of an intriguing batch of Italian up-and-comers that includes Blatta & Inesha and the Crookers. He turns mainstream pop into feverish jacking fodder (check his mix of the Golden Filter's cover of PB&J's "Lay It Down") and his original material leaves marks:

M.I.A. - "Paper Planes" (Cates & dpL's Papered-Up Dub)
As we've explained before, the West Coast duo of Cates & dpL specializes in moody, techy whoomp. In addition to their highly-regarded original productions, they've applied this template to a pretty wide array of popular songs, ranging from the Foo Fighters' "Everlong" to Nina Simone's "It's a New Day," and here, they're whispering softly to one of the wildest, most unruly songs of 2008; everybody from DFA to Diplo to Scottie B took a crack at "Paper Planes," and all their remixes sucked.
But Cates & dpL outsmarted the competition this time by diving underneath the original's samples and dancing in an abyss of bass, 8-bit chirps and a barely recognizable vocal loop of Miss Arulpragasam. Go deep!

Also true: everybody knows the Farrier brothers best for their hissing, dosed electro-house sound, but "Drivetime," a track off the aforementioned Golden Traxe, shows they're capable of quite a bit more. Full of a wobbly, swooning kind of magic, "Drivetime" is takes the elements found in a million other tracks called "Night Drive" or "Drive By Night" or "Time For the Night" or, um, "Night Drive Through Time By Night We're Driving," and arranges them into something that actually sounds like it was made by artists with coherent voices.

So it looks like 2009 is going to be the Year of the Really Awesome Collaboration. In addition to the Count and Sinden, which is supposed to come out this summer, and Major Lazer, an album-length collabo between Diplo and Switch (!!!) due in June, there's Moderat, a new project involving the techno-dancehall wackos Modeselektor and the prince of moving, soft-toned techno, Apparat. The album is due in about six weeks, and the combination of Apparat's muted, wistful melodies and Modeselektor's bizarre bounce is fantastic. For Jokers of the Scene, who crashed the party with Fool's Gold's crew last year, this means putting the finishing touches on a set that's likely to sound much more at home with what goes on at most of the WMC parties: bigger, longer, and simpler. There are a lot of reasons we're so excited about Cut Copy's upcoming DJ set at LPR. First, there's the fact that Cut Copy are amazing DJs (they did an installment of Fabriclive!!). Then there's the fact that it's their only DJ gig in the U.S. of the year. But bigger, maybe, than all of that, is the fact that they'd headed back to Oz to work on a third album. Well, we don't know what Young Chris charges for guest spots these days, but he sounds just like Jigga, and for that alone, he deserves your attention. Combine it with his excellent taste in producers, and you've got someone who's likely to get a lot of blogspot love this year.
The original "We Don't Give a F$&%" came out in 2008, but Crossfaded Bacon, the tiny Philly label/blog that put it out, is giving away a ridonkulous remix EP for free, complete with work by Eli Escobar, Cousin Cole, and two pair-ups that have us losing our cool: DJ Ayres and Nadastrom, together at last, turning "We Don't Give a F$%&" into a busy, exotic piece of hotness.

Izza Kizza - "Hello" (DJ Wool Remix; Euro Edit)
DJ Wool understands what a big deal Izza Kizza is. Timbo's protegé is going to be the biggest thing on the radio this summer, and Wool wants to make sure you're all prepared. On this mix, Wool takes Kizza's a cappella and threads it into a warm techno sunrise, with zooming synths, driving, submerged bass, and a tasteful electro-house prickle.

Giorgio Moroder - "E=MC2"
Remember advent calendars? You used to look forward to them intensely when you were a kid? They made the two week build-up to Christmas that much sweeter, full of chocolates and random little goodies that were guaranteed to brighten your day? Well, the good people at Thrive Music, who are releasing A-Trak's new mixtape, Infinity +1, on March 17, have decided to try a similar approach in the days leading up to its release.
The track we're offering here, which aaaalmost made it onto Infinity +1's playlist, was technically put on offer two days ago, and it was pretty tough to decide on just one thing. Merry Christmas to all.

Classixx featuring Jeppe - "I'll Get You" (Royal Rumble Edit)
Ooooooooooooooooooooh. Jeppe's doing guest spots now?! How cool is that? We're still a little confused about why Junior Senior broke up, but if their lead singer wants to start lending his pipes to those in need, we're not going to complain. Especially when you consider how many acts just need a good vocal part to put them over the top.
Classixx knows. Regular readers know how much we love their big-room house production (we feel like they could get Lifelike big this year), and here, even in this truncated version spliced together by Royal Rumble, we can hear the seeds of a hit. Like, possibly a very, very, very big one.

Tiga - "Shoes"
We have to be brutally honest here: we didn't get "Mind Dimension." That combination of the brown-noise-grade bass and the random saxophone? Didn't float our boats.
It definitely made us worry that maybe Tiga was going to overdo it for his second album, Ciao Tiga!, but "Shoes" has (pardon us for a second) kicked those anxieties out the window. It's silly, it's funky, it's almost Prince-y. Yeah. That's right. We said it.
Prince-y.

Friendly Fires - "Paris" (Aeroplane Remix featuring Au Revoir Simone)
We love it when we get a label's permission to post something around here. Even though we'll always have the "But everybody else is doing this!" excuse, there's nothing quite like offering everybody something that's high-quality and legally offerable. In this case, though, the emphasis is squarely on the high-quality part: Aeroplane has gotten the slo-mo, chugging disco sound down to a science. Here, they take "Paris," one of Friendly Fires' most desperate and endearing songs, and turn it into a warm, inviting promise with just a few small changes. Describing this as beautiful almost doesn't do it justice.

Telepathe - "Devil's Trident" (XIII Remix)
It's funny how helpful ADD can be in this business. I was on the verge of posting this Lauren Flax remix of Telepathe's "So Fine," when suddenly I got distracted by....something. Whatever it was, all of a sudden the music in my ears was changing, and changing drastically. It certainly wasn't the twitching, despondent mix of "So Fine" anymore. The tempo had changed, and so had the energy. We were suddenly lost in something that had the damp and echoes of dubstep, but also the emptiness of techno. Then we heard the horns, and figured it out: we were listening to the best remix of "Devil's Trident" we've ever found, a haunting plummet through a cavern produced by XIII, who drums in Foals by night and does remixes in the early hours before falling asleep in front of his laptop.

Once upon a time, there was an indie rock quintet called Cazals, and an indie dance label called Kisuné. The two of them met in Paris one day, and it changed them both forever.

What is the deal with all these club people writing sad-sack songs about how lonely they are on the road? Oh well. Whatever gets them in the creative mood, we guess: this has superclub sensation written all over it, with that lead melody that sounds like it was ripped off a late 90's Creamfields compilation stabbing out from a buzzing, insistent bassline and trance-esque synth flutters. Jesse Rose - "Touch My Horn" (The Hump Day Project's "Dutch My Horn" Mix)
Oh heeeelll yeah. Jesse Rose's What Do You Do If You Don't just came out last week, and that means it's only a matter of time before the rejected remixes and bootlegs start popping up. There's a lot you can do with Jesse's music, and "Touch My Horn," which sounds like a Basement Jaxx party condensed into three minutes, is particularly ripe for some imaginative remixing. Enter the Hump Day Project; the HDP is part of an Australian consortium of producers/DJs called the Troublemakers, and here, they throw the a cappella from Missy Elliott's "Pass That Dutch" over a tidily edited version of "Touch My Horn."

Kid Cudi - "'09 Freestyle"
It doesn't seem like "Drop," the Polow da Don beat Cudi's rhyming over, is going anywhere, but we feel like it could become a great mixtape staple (Eventually, somebody's gotta come along and kill it, right?). That's Santogold's voice you hear floating all seasick over the drums, and the clacking mix of handclaps and wood could make Timbaland jealous. Sure, it sounds exactly like "A Milli," but how can anyone call that a bad thing?
Cudi's got one weird-ass flow, but Kanye's attracted to guys like that - Consequence, Rhymefest, even 'Ye himself - and given that Cudi's upcoming album features production work by Mr. West, the Kid's probably going to be weird-ass-laughing all the way to the bank.

David Bowie vs. MGMT - "Stardust Kids" (A Plus D Mashup)
We know that mash-ups can be pretty hit or miss; too many DJs and bedroom producers will make stupid mistakes, like combining songs that are in different keys or doing a lazy job of making sure there are no awkward overlaps. But we also know that a good mash-up is tough to top, and this is easily the best one we've heard all year. MGMT's "Kids" was one of the defining songs of 2008, but its appeal is timeless, and Bootie's A Plus D decided the only move was to pair it with an equally timeless song, David Bowie's "Stardust."

MSTRKRFT featuring E-40 - "Click Click"
Hey! Did you guys know that the new MSTRKRFT album comes out in three weeks? True story! ALP and JFK couldn't have timed it any better, what with SXSW starting that weekend, WMC just six days later, and then a sleepy little festival called Coachella three weeks after that.
It doesn't look like any of Fist of God's distinguished guests are going to be along for the ride, and that kind of bums us out. Sure, the bill itself would be pretty weird, but every time we think about it, we imagine Raekwon doing hammy air guitar moves and E-40 giving the crowd the sign of the devil.
And in our giddier moments, we imagine Ghostface doing a little headbanging/stage diving/crowd surfing.

Ohhhhhh snap. When Fool's Gold comes at you, they come at you hard, don't they? First they drop the long-anticipated (maybe a little behind schedule?) Trackademicks 12", and now comes this nutso piece from Congorock, one of those Italian nutjobs cut from the same cloth as Crookers and Blatta & Inesha. Dude's figured out that if you take carnival organ, pitch it up all fucked-up-like and then throw it under some distended bass, it sounds incredible, and that's what's going on here. Morsy & Koko Dozo - "The Shine"
Being new to this planet and everything, we figure it's gonna take Koko Dozo a while to figure out our customs. There's a lot to learn, after all, and plus there are certain things that most space aliens never pick up on. Take musical collaboration, first of all. Most earthlings won't tell you that they're often really awkward, that they're not supposed to sound really natural (a boomping, jazzy New York house beat) and really hot (the always-delightful Amy Douglas vibing with coke bottle percussion, piano chords, and bluesy guitar licks).
We're going to forgive the space aliens this one time, but only because the results are so good. Turn back your clocks with this one.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Heads Will Roll"
So it's starting to sound like this new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album is going to do pretty well. First off, Nick Zinner and Karen O (Brian Chase seems to be involved only in name now) have decided to make a New Wave-y, night-out-in-downtown-Manhattan-in-1981 kind of album, or at least an album that sounds like what they imagine those years sounded like. With synths that are both grand and gritty, guitars that ring with confidence, and Karen O gasping and sneering, "Heads Will Roll" sounds like it's bound to keep them in the limelight for a bit longer.
Plus, Kanye debuted it. And that always helps.

The Golden Filter - "Solid Gold"
The major labels are in deep sh*t, y'all. And when we say deep s#+^, we mean deep !(&* . How are they supposed to compete with stuff like Dummy Magazine, a London-based nightlife web beast that recently decided to start its own record label? See, not only did Dummy have the good taste to assemble a great blog-house cast (The Golden Filter, who seem to be getting better on a weekly basis, plus Mondkopf and Russ Chimes) for its debut release. They've also decided that hosting something people want is more valuable than a random assortment of suckers buying tracks they stumble onto over at Beatport. Or something.
Bottom line: EMI's days are numbered.

Curses! - "The Deep End" (Holy Ghost! Remix)
Admit it: this combination of names doesn't make any sense to you. Curses!? Holy Ghost!? Together at last...? About the only thing these artists have in common is their exclamation points, and that hardly seems like fertile ground for a successful remix collaboration.
But
part of what's made each so successful is how bull-headed they can be, and here, Holy Ghost! does what Holy Ghost! does best: roll out the glinting hi-hats, mingle between the bongos and unhurried disco bass, wait for the anticipation to build on the horns, and then unleash the piano chords. It's tried and true, but what takes this to another level is the vocal and guitar work. We have no idea when the new Holy Ghost! single/EP/album is scheduled to come out, but if you put this track on repeat, waiting forever won't seem like the most terrible proposition.

Pet Shop Boys - "Love, Etc." (Gui Boratto Mix)
OMFG, the Pet Shop Boys are releasing a new album! Yes is coming out in late March (Yes!), and "Love, Etc," the first single, is due to drop the week before.
The original version, co-written with someone called Xenomania, moves forward sadly and steadily, but as you might expect, Gui Boratto's take is a little bit more complicated. Boratto takes the original guitar riff, slows it down, and turns it into a repeating flicker at the heart of a nighttime mirage full of whirs, sighs, and Neil Tennant's whispers. One of the best remixes we've heard all month.

Thieves Like Us - "Miss You"
Ever since Kitsuné drove "Drugs In My Body" (and, some would argue, their brand's credibility) into the ground last summer, Thieves Like Us kept a low profile. Very low. Like, "Hey, I wonder whatever happened to those dudes," low.
Lucky for us, though, Play Music, their woozy, sneakily addictive debut, will finally come out in America (April 7), and they've got something for us to celebrate. "Miss You" is all kinds of f*cked up - drunk, exhausted, lovesick, maybe a little coked up - definitely not to be left unattended. But by some perverse yet merciful stroke, all those evils blend together in just the right way to get the song home, into your cranium, where it belongs.

Gui Boratto - "Take My Breath Away"
Everything about Gui Boratto's music, from its pacing and production right down to the melodies, seems designed to induce an altered state. On his narcotic debut album, Chromophobia, Boratto got his listeners both coming and going: it managed to both hum with techno's mechanical efficiency and flow with warm, inviting textures. His latest, the wryly titled Take My Breath Away, looks for that same balance in a bleaker environment, and it won't surprise his fans to hear that he finds it. On the album's title track, which Kompakt is giving away, Boratto conjures up a world where almost everything is dead; a limpid pulse guides you past miles of burnt out, humming machinery before finally alighting on a small patch of life. Grab this, and take a tour of the end of the world.

Architecture in Helsinki - "Like It Or Not" (El Guincho Remix)
As we've pointed out before, Architecture in Helsinki's music is perfect for cultural cross-pollination. We're still having trouble figuring out why, but we're loving all these opportunities to think it over. In this case, we don't know which party contacted which, but either way, it's a match made in heaven: El Guincho, whose debut album, Alegranza, snuck very quietly onto several Top 10 lists at the end of 2008, assembles music that's exotic and delirious. Thanks to a combination of dubby bassline, an ingeniously sequenced police siren, and some magnificent ambient noise, Architecture in Helsinki sound like they're in the jungle, at the beach, and in some mind-meltingly humid hotel lobby all at the same time. DC Recordings is one of those labels for hardcore music nerds. Name-dropped by everybody from Simian Mobile Disco to Pedro Winter, DC makes music that is out there; from spacey techno and shimmering krautrock to wobbly, weirdo disco, their discography boasts releases with titles like Revenge of the Iron Ferret, The Madness of Moths and, rather cheekily, Coney Island Baby and Let It Bleed. Higamos Hogamos is one of DC's newest signings, and their eponymously titled debut, as you might expect, is also out there. U.S. Royalty - "Keep It Cool" (Bo Flex Remix)
Back when we interviewed Passion Pit's Ayad Al Adhamy a few months ago, fools were all like, "Who's that? Whyn't you interview Michael for?!" Well, here's the short answer. Ayad is Passion Pit's keyboard and guitar player, and he'll soon be a graduate of the very prestigious Berklee College of Music. The long answer is that Ayad has this newly developed alter ego he uses for remixes, Bo Flex, and you should keep it at the front of your brain. Like his pal Michael, Bo Flex doesn't remix for the dancefloor. Bo Flex remixes around the spirit of the vocals, and here, he turns U.S. Royalty's "Keep It Cool" into an outsized, romantic soarer that floats on some masterfully arranged synthesizers. Remember the name.

Imagine this track played live, for example: live vocals (and even better: live sampling and manipulation of vocals!), a little synthesizer magic, and that big, thumping carnivale percussion booming and banging across a gigantic stage, lights bursting and pulsing in time to the music.

The man definitely kept things loud and scary to build his name up, but it turns out Hamburg's prince of darkness likes disco-house just like the rest of us. How much? Ladyhawke - "Magic" (Cates & dpL Make Magic Bootleg)
Ahh yes. We're starting to think that Pip Brown has kept her songs' stems under very tight wraps. Aside from an unofficial remix of "Paris is Burning" by Cut Copy, we haven't seen much in the way of Ladyhawke remixes out there on teh interwebz. On some level, we have to applaud Pip for holding onto the goods (even if it makes our job a little harder), but maybe even on a whole other level, we have to think this was by design. Playing hard to get makes suitors more creative, and these Cates & dpL folks have shown off a nice bit of imagination here, turning "Magic" into a patient, mysterious tech-house track. Pip's vocals waft across boomping, Dirtybird-y beats like a spirit, always there, but not quite all there, which we think is perfect. After all, absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Dead Pixels - "Words are Poison" (One Man Party and R. Kid Remix)
With all due respect, Dead Pixels is a garden-variety English party band. They play fast, they play tight, their songs are kinda spooky, and we're not convinced that we're ever going to bother you about them again. Unless, of course, their choice of remixers is always this good. For a remix of their debut single, Dead Pixels reached out to One Man Party, who is better known as Steve Slingeneyer, or the drummer in Soulwax, for something brawnier, something manlier, and boy does he deliver. With some help from R. Kid, the One Man Party take on "Words are Poison" is dark and hard, halfway between Rob Zombie and Mr. Oizo. Spooky.

We're sure plenty of you have been wondering what happened to Yuksek. Cuz it's been like, months since he's released a remix or whatever, so like, is he dead? Turns out he was just putting the finishing touches on his debut album, Away From the Sea. This bad boy's got guest work from Sh*t Disco, Chromeo and Amanda Blank on it, and it dropped on January 26 in France. We're not sure what the story is with American distribution (no doubt Steve Aoki is taking a long look at it), but until that gets sorted out, enjoy a reminder of how he got the album deal in the first place: "I Like to Play" is French as f*ck, full of blurting keyboard stabs, punchy, hard drums, grinding bass, and weirdly pitched-up Mac talk vocals. S-O-V must've shoved a Saint Christopher icon up her nose when she was a kid or something. The biggest midget has had the worst luck every time she's gone on tour, whether it's suffering from food poisoning, getting too drunk, or just plain running out of gas, and unfortunately for her, that saga continues: visa troubles are delaying her upcoming North American mini-tour by a week.
This obviously has pissed a lot of people off, and her label, in an effort to calm us all down, got UK vet Jackbeats to whip up a megamix for distribution. Comprised of both old hits and new, over instrumentals both big and small, this is Universal's way of saying sorry.

Kylie Minogue - "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" (Soulwax Kyuss Mix)
So, next Friday we have the One Man Party again. Sure, Danger's co-headlining this Webster Hall gig, but Steve Slingeneyer, Soulwax's drummer, gets our motor revving in a way that we sometimes have trouble explaining. His brute force makes that band go, and to celebrate it, we're offering you a golden oldie (well, an oldie by Internet standards anyway): Kylie Minogue's chorus was one of the most addictive things we'd ever heard in 2002, and the Dewaele brothers decided to see just how far that addiction could go with this remix. They stacked Kyuss's knuckle-dragging riffs onto Kylie's little voice, and surprise surprise, it held up.
Friday, February 6: get ready to rock.

Peter, Björn and John - "Nothing to Worry About"
Gotta admit, we weren't exactly thrilled with "Lay It Down." We thought it reached for humor that wasn't there, and we also found the hook fairly underwhelming. But we knew "Nothing to Worry About" was going to be better before we even heard it. Why? Because it premiered on Kanye West's blog, that's why! There's no way Kanye would besmirch his good name by posting some watery indie rock mess on there. And even though he might not be that much of a speller, the man's on point about one thing: "DRUMS ARE CRAZY."

The Presets - "This Boy's in Love" (Kevin Saunderson Remix)
Kevin Saunderson is one of those producers who can make familiar musical elements sound like they've dropped down from outer space. That talent helped turn him into one of the founding fathers of techno music, and this Friday at Webster Hall, you'll be able to hear it applied to both the past and present. Here, on a remix commissioned by Scion A/V, Saunderson turns the Presets' "This Boy's in Love" into a desolate, insomniac runaway anthem; with the help of some yawning bass and jittery hi-hats, Saunderson transforms the song's bridge into a defiant promise, full of the same restless determination that techno still embodies.

Anoraak - "Endless Summer"
it's finally here. We try not to toot our own horns too much, but we're pretty pleased with ourselves here. The New York City premiere for the Valerie collective? That kind of thing only happens once in a blue moon, and we think it's auspicious that it's our first big show of 2009. This is one in a series of morsels we're hoping whets your appetites for the big show this Friday, a track that shares its name with Anoraak's label, Endless Summer Recordings.

Oh Snap!!! - "I'm Too Fat to Be a Hipster" (Mightyfools Remix)
Like most Oh Snap!!! tracks, "I'm Too Fat to be a Hipster" is definitely half joke, half song. This is rarely a winning balance (you usually want more of an emphasis in either direction), but it certainly makes them fantastic remix fodder. Over here, Mightyfools brings a bassline that'll make anybody lose weight. Lawls and sweat all around.

Frankie Knuckles vs. Animal Collective - "Your Love, My Girls" (Mashup)
To celebrate the release of the first great album of 2009, Merriweather Post Pavilion, we're hooking you up with an ingenious mash-up of two wonderful songs. To hear some tell it, the former ("Your Love") served as an influence for the latter ("My Girls"), and while we're going to take that with a grain of salt, we can't deny that they fit together very nicely. That cycling arpeggio represents two very different kinds of love, depending on who's doing the singing, and even if this doesn't quite work on the dancefloor, it absolutely does both songs proud.

33Hz - "Sentinel of Love" (OrtzRoka Remix)
Man, that double 33Hz double A-side is so close we can taste it; "I Feel Alive/Sentinel of Love" is out this coming Tuesday on Foolhouse, the Fluokids' record label. We're already going to be giving away a few copies at the Valerie showcase that Friday, but we couldn't resist passing this little extra on to you just before the weekend. Up-and-coming band OrtzRoka has turned "Sentinel of Love" into a sublime New Wave roller, full of heavenly synth harmonies, nervous hi-hats, and a thick Italo bassline that we could ride all night. One more reason that January 20th can't come fast enough.

Adrian Lux - "Strawberry" (Rapclash Remix featuring Rye Rye, Lorentz, M. Sakarias & Alexis Weak)
If you'd told us two summers ago that Rye Rye, that little 16-year-old sprite who made her bones on Blaqstarr's "Shake it to the Ground" was going to become an internationally known hip-house rapper, we would have called you crazy. The girl who devoted more of her Myspace to prom pictures than flyers and ads for upcoming gigs? The one who danced in her own videos and invited her mom to shows? C'mon.
Well, here she is, bouncing over one of 2008's biggest arpeggios, trying to catch a glimpse of the life that's flown past since that first track dropped. "Can you hear me, home? I'm calling," goes her chorus, and we hope they do. Gorgeous and addictive.

Russ Chimes - "She's Got the Heat"
Russ Chimes is taking part in this Valerie showcase we've got lined up for January 23, and we couldn't be happier. See, where Anoraak and College all work the heartbreak angle, Russ is the one who mashes down on the gas and speeds things up. Russ's tracks are the ones that evoke the car chases, the climactic fights to the finish, and the final countdowns to judgment, success, or failure.
Incredibly, Russ hasn't released anything formally yet, so are happy to pass this bright, bouncy, glossy piece of action on to you for free. Get ready.

Home Video - It Will Be Okay EP
Most people didn't hear Home Video's debut album, No Certain Night or Morning, as an indie rock harbinger of sounds to come. Even though their synth-chilled melancholia sounded like music from Mars back in 2006 to most people, we knew the group would be a force to be reckoned with.
And with that sound of theirs poised to rule over these colder months, the band decided to remind us they're still better than most , if not all, of the newjacks. On It Will Be Okay, an EP the band's giving away for free on their website, the band hangs Thom Yorke-esque vocal melodies over a driving mix of live and programmed drums, chilled, shining synthesizers, and melancholy basslines. Four songs that will keep your lonely embers warm even as temperatures drop into the single digits.

Miike Snow - "Animal" (Crookers Remix)
We know what you're thinking: this is going to be another one of those noisy, grinding, merciless Crookers remixes that leaves you feeling pulverized, isn't it?
Nope. It's not. Not only is this the exact opposite of what Phra and Bot have built their reputations on, it's also one of this young new year's most pleasant surprises. We have no idea who or what Miike Snow is all about, but this Crookers mix sounds like some lost collaboration between Panda Bear and Radiocl*t, with bouncy synth bass, tabla samples, and distant 8-bit collapses buoying upbeat vocals. The song's refrain, "I'm still an animal," will please all the nu primitives who spent the last two years living on Animal Collective and Yeasayer, and if this is at all indicative of things to come for either Crookers or Miike Snow, then they're going to have one hell of a year.

One of the things we look forward to at the end of every year is the predictions. We were too busy to write ours own a few weeks ago, and we figure we should make it up to you with MP3s. See, we were going to write something about the hipster rappers finally making that crossover, and it seems like Mad Decent's going to have a lot to do with it. The Paper Route Gangstaz tape finally came out in December, and this, an "exclusive" track from the label's blog, shows Santi offering up arguably her best verses to the Oscar winners. Anoraak's No Love Lost Records Mixtape
It seems like the Valerie collective made their move at just the right time. Summer had just started to end, people had to start packing up their beach chairs and getting ready for school, and out of nowhere, in come these soft synth pads and these pretty arpeggios and an 80's teen movie sensibility. Valerie's artists were offering the sound of a lost summer, something more melancholy than euphoric, and here, in an installment for No Love Lost Records's mix series, Anoraak pushes that Valerie brand hard. At 70 minutes, it's a journey, but with sunlight at a premium, these things have a way of coming in handy.

Lifelike vs. Morgan Page - "The Electric Road" (Morgan Page Bootleg)
Being super-duper cool has its drawbacks, we'll admit. Like, see, because we're always at the next-level underground-once-in-a-lifetime at night, we'd never even heard this song, even though it was apparently huge in like New Jersey or whatever until a few minutes ago. But we were rereading that interview we did with Lifelike and listening to "So Electric," one of our favorite Lifelike tracks of all time, and thinking about how exciting it would be if he did get to work with some pop acts.
How exciting, exactly? Put it this way: we'd listen to KTU for daaaaaaaays if they played stuff like this, supercool reputation be damned.

Crookers and Boy 8-Bit - "The Crow" (Malente Re-Edit)
Too good to be true: "The Crow" is Boy 8-Bit and Crookers take on Proxy's horror show "The Raven." We put the Crookers name on here first to get your attention, but it sounds like Diplo's Boy is in the driver's seat here: spooky arpeggios and constant mutation dominate this one. Even though there's something dark and ugly about what's going on, this is too smart to be Phra and Bot's idea.
Still: too good.

Kanye West - "Love Lockdown" (Flying Lotus Remix)
In an interview we did with him at the beginning of this year, the Kills' Jamie Hince said he thinks 98% of remixes are total crap. And anyone who rummages around on blogs as much as we do knows that he's right. Most aim to make the parent material club-functional, and an alarmingly small number of them succeed. Not surprisingly, the failure rate is higher still for artists trying to transform the song into something else.
This, however, constitutes the cream, that other two percent. Flying Lotus's Los Angeles, a smoky, swirling swoon of beats, came thiiiiiiiis close to making our Top Ten Albums list, and he turns Kanye's "Love Lockdown" into a mysterious, melancholy track full of surprises. Not quite dubstep, not quite dancehall, not quite hip-hop, and far more than all three, it's what a remix should be

MGMT - "Kids" (Pet Shop Boys' Abstrakt Mix)
This, apparently, is the kind of stuff you get when you're signed to a major. Or, at least, the kind of thing you get when your debut album gets put on a gajabajillion Best of 2008 lists. (One or the other...) Anyway, "Kids" has one of those hooks that's so simple that it could've come from any time, or any place, and here, one of the best duos to ever do it take it back to the mid-90's, turning the track into a mysterious and sexy float on a tide of synthesizers.

N.A.S.A. - "Money" (The Count of Monte Cristal Remix)
This is getting ridiculous. How deep does N.A.S.A. go? This is like one of those shadowy super-organizations that you read about in books or see in the movies. At this point, we wouldn't be surprised to learn that Clive Davis, Quincy Jones and LA Reid are executive producing this record, or that Jerry Wexler isn't really dead, and that he's actually masterminded this entire project from an alternate dimension that you can only enter via a secret stone portal.
Oh yeah, the remix. It bangs. All those guests so lovingly assembled for the original make for incredible snippets (check David Byrne sounding like some forgotten crooner that Radio Slave might've sampled sometime in the past year), the hi-hats are white-hot, and the bass is sidechained to perfection.
Beware. N.A.S.A.'s watching.

Heroes of the Dancefloor - "Same Scandal" (Sam Dillon Remix)
One of the great things about New York is its ability to bring artists together, and Heroes of the Dancefloor is one of those unlikely all-star teams that probably wouldn't have happened anywhere else. Comprised of Mamazu, Nick Chacona, Dan Moore (a keyboardist who's worked with everyone from Roni Size to Roy Ayers), Gary Alesbrook (trumpet player for the Scissor Sisters), and Alex Hutchings, a highly decorated jazz guitarist, the Heroes recently released an album of jazzy, classy house, with some beautiful ballads thrown in for good measure, on INgrooves.
But more importantly, the Heroes have two silent, non-musical partners: PIcture the Homeless and Coalition for the Homeless, who will receive proceeds from the Heroes' sales and put it toward helping out the neediest during the coldest time of the year. The subtext of all these posts is that we're hoping you'll buy the music we feature, and this time we're not going to leave it unsaid. Buy a track, buy the album, make a donation. Happy holidays.

As usual, Australia laps the competition. The Bag Raiders turn one of Cut Copy's weakest tracks (all right, we said it) into an 80's teen movie highlight reel, with MIDI horns, an arpeggio built out of guitar picking, and big fun synths, and in doing so pretty much embarrass all this track's other would-be remixers out there. Chromeo fans, take note: for all our complaining about the subpar electrofunk that started bubbling up at summer's end, producers are starting to get it right. Wow. Turns out that's really just their steez. God knows what their secret is, but in addition to "Money" and "Gifted," which we figure is going to be just enormous, they've recorded tracks featuring contributions by....wait for it...Ol' Dirty Bastard (before he died), Fatlip, Gift of Gab, Chali 2Na, Karen O, David Byrne, Tom Waits, and Kool Keith. Chester French - "She Loves Everybody"
America is supposed to be some kind of anti-intellectual country, and in some ways, maybe it is. But when it comes to pop music, we welcome smarty-pantses with open arms: Dan Wilson (of Semisonic) and Rivers Cuomo (of Weezer), arguably two of the 90's most successful rock/pop men, both went to Harvard, and there isn't enough room here to list all the musical heroes who have masters degrees hanging on their walls. But getting back to the Crimson for a second, both Cuomo and Wilson mastered pop's greatest challenge, writing songs that spoke in many different tones to many different people. And now Chester French, a duo signed to Pharrell's Star Trak label, continues that proud tradition. "She Loves Everybody" is a tale of Girl Trouble with sly guitar tricks, confident hooks, and something for every frustrated lover in the world. Get educated.

Twisted Wires - "Another Night at the Raw Deal"
Remember how crazy everybody was going over the Italians Do It Better label last year? To be honest, we never quite understood it. Where blogs and magazines alike all seemed to use words like "aching" and "touching," to us it felt more depressing. It was too strained, too minimal, and it felt like music for the apocalypse. So now that the economy has gone to shit and the Hope is still almost two months away, it makes sense that a new round of singles is on the way. And "Another Night at the Raw Deal," by a mysterious Texas outfit known as Twisted Wires, is absolutely music for the apocalypse. It maintains the sonic aesthetic that Johnny Jewel conjured through his label's first releases, but it ups the musicianship more than a tad; it sounds like music that would warm up a small town discotheque after a nuclear apocalypse, and it will keep you up at night.

As some of you may recall, we really, really didn't like the last Black Strobe record. It turns out we were stupid to doubt him at all: Rebotini's upcoming EP, Music Components, is going to make Black Strobe fans excited. You want your remixers to be hungry. If they're in all kinds of demand, who knows what kind of effort you're going to get out of them? They might throw the damn thing together while a pair of (possibly) underage twins is tweaking their knobs in the back of a tour bus. No, no: what you want is a band that's gotten a few smallish blips on international blog radar, a group that needs their version to get accepted because it might be the difference between people remembering their name in 2009 and forgetting it. Pick that group, because when you pick that group, you get big, bright poly-disco, full of MIDI strings, old-school synthesizers, and that familiar rush that makes disco go. Yeah. You want that.

We've been fiending for a remix of "100%" since Fancy Footwork came out last summer, and frankly, given all the time that'd passed, we figured that we'd missed out, that Dave and P had pressed up like 200 white labels and nobody was telling nobody about it. But instead, Bacardi's music people stepped it up and are giving remixes away for free. Treasure Fingers put one together that's only so-so, but the Nacho Lover entry comes correct by importing that slow-jam vibe to the dancefloor.

Foals - "Olympic Airways" (Ewan Pearson Remix)
If someone can explain why nobody's bothered to write a magazine feature/profile about Ewan Pearson, we'd love to hear them do it. Let's just rattle off a few things the man has done in the last year: produced the best tracks on M83's Saturdays = Youth, remixed Kelley Polar, Supermayer, Hot Chip, Mademoiselle Caro, and....oh yeah, Foals, a band that has not exactly remixed well. But Pearson makes it sound like a walk in the park here, with just the right synth ambience surrounding Andrew Mears's vocals.

Blänk featuring Young Ivy - "Shirt Off"
You guys all know we're usually pretty good about avoiding cheesy stuff, right? We're all about hooking you up with the finer things, but sometimes you need something that's just silly and fun. And Blänk, a Swedish duo armed with a fun guest vocalist, has provided it:
"Shirt Off," with its super-bright synths, simple house beat, and that unexpectedly real (or at least sampled from a real source) bass guitar, is a house anthem waiting to happen, and you might as well love it for what it is, because you're going to be hearing it out. A lot.

Dances With White Girls - "Everyone's Got to Make a Living"
When DJs produce music of their own, they have to make a tough decision. On the one hand, there's the urge to make something that will touch people, something that will have an effect even after the pills have worn off and the house lights come on. And on the other, you want to make something you can bring with you in your record bag or on your hard drive. On New Crack Swing, the debut EP by Dances With White Girls, the dude known to his friends as Frog went the extra mile and did both. Using desolate piano chords, hardscrabble static-y pads, mysterious arpeggios, and a raspy vocal sample, "Everyone's Got to Make a Living" feeds off dance music's energy and while evoking its loneliness, and it does so with the shapeshifting fluidity understood best by dance music's lifers. This album's been a long time coming, and it's come out just right.

Kicksville - "Phatty"
Kicksville is the future, no matter how you look at it. A collective presided over by Mayor Mike Stehr and Commissioner Conrad St. Clair, they've embarked on a release project called Season One, in which the group releases a digital single every week for thirteen straight weeks. The first episode, "Phatty," is electronica that resurrects the excitement that swirled around that genre in the 90's, with momentum that drives straight ahead into the ominousness and mystery of the chords. Stay tuned.

Dizzee Rascal featuring Calvin Harris - "Dance Wiv Me" (Shazam Remix)
Some people want remixes to be like good covers, where the original song gets turned inside out and made it into something totally new. But we think the superior remix always improves on the original's spirit, and Shazam, a remixer/producer from Perth who's getting harder and harder to ignore, does that perfectly here. Dizzee Rascal's "Dance Wiv Me" might be light-hearted, but deep down, it means its title, and Shazam's production really, really means it: the original bassline gets some electrofunk wriggle added to it, and the arpeggios and synths are just spot-on. Perfect, danceable pop magic. Get it.

Housse de Racket - "Oh Yeah!" (Tepr Remix)
Out of all the DJ/producers doing it out of France right now, Tepr might be the best. And before you have a hissy fit about that statement, hear us out: aside from DJ Mehdi, how many Ed Banger/Institubes/Ekler'o'shock fiends display the same range that this kid does? Housse de Racket's "Oh Yeah!" is a pop-tastic guitar and drums song, but by the time Tepr's done with it, the track's got a spring-loaded, MTV-ready hip-pop beat that the dude oughta consider shopping to Rihanna. And we can guarantee that most of the competition would fall on its fluorescent-colored asses trying to do something like this.

Brooklyn's Tigercity push that soft synth 80's mania, and for the most part, they're still figuring out that nice arpeggios and arrangements aren't the whole story. Fischerspooner - "Danse en France" (D.I.M. Remix)
What's that, you say? This reminds you a little bit of "Is You"? That track that fired D.I.M. into the dance world's consciousness with all the subtlety of a howitzer? The track that dozens of DJs had on their year-end Best Of 2007 lists because of its superior pacing and inimitably disgusting basslines? The one that still gets people dancing that extra little bit harder, even a whole year later? That track?
Yeah. This sounds kinda like that.

Franz Ferdinand - "The Fallen" (Justice Remix)
In an interview we read not too long ago, Gaspard and Xavier mentioned that they are probably going to stop doing remixes. We assume they're men of their word, and that this was already in the can when they'd done the interview, and so even though we're sad they're not going to bother with remixes anymore, this isn't a bad note to close on. They finally decided to ditch the disco slap bass, and instead upgraded to a snarling, sharply truncated bass sample that works well with the nervous drums and jabbering edits of Alex Kapranos's voice. Is this a sign? Stay tuned.

Tittsworth featuring Kid Sister & Pase Rock - "WTF" (DJ Wool Remix)
Plant Music brings the music to the people! As we've mentioned before, "WTF" is the runaway highlight of Tittsworth's debut Twelve Steps, and the good people at Plant want you to know. This time, we're bringing you a quirky take from the recently departed DJ Wool....Calm down, calm down; he didn't die, he moved to Berlin, and it sounds like it's done him good. Here, in a bouncy mix of quasi-8-bit blips and a melody that sounds more than a little inspired by Orbital's classic, "Chime," Kid Sis and Pasey Pase's verses are pure fun. It's an unexpected combination, but it's an inspired one, too.

Lykke Li - "I'm Good, I'm Gone" (Fred Falke Remix)
Lykke Li is harder to remix than you might expect. In spite of the strong hooks and Bjorn Yttling's clever instrumentation, Li's paper-thin voice doesn't always hold up in the face of normal club instrumentation. Basically, you need to pair her vocals with the right people: think disJokke, the Loving Hand (well, sort of...that was kinda busy, for our tastes) and absolutely, positively, above-all-else, think of Fred Falke. Falke's music brought ecstasy back to clubs (both literally and, uh, more literally), and here, he lends one of Li's best tracks some ghostly whirs, a soulful organ loop, and those synths that make nights into the most beautiful blurs.

The BPA feat. Emmy the Great - "Seattle" (Crazy P Remix)
When Fatboy Slim says, "Remix," that makes most people pull out all the stops. In this case, Crazy P (the P is for "Penis") cuts Emmy the Great's vocals up, turning her voice into a metronomic tic, a breathy sigh, and a back-up vocal. This painstakingly assembled trio binds together three very different (and very sexy) disco-house beats that slyly meld past and present together. It's a great showcase for this underappreciated duo's talents, who are really superior when they're at their best. But then, when Norman Cook calls you, you better be.

Passion Pit - "Sleepyhead"
We might be getting ahead of ourselves, but doesn't Passion Pit's full-length debut have to be considered one of 2009's most exciting prospects? Think about it: the guy's debut EP, Chunk of Change, is this bright and beautiful mix of homemade mess and slick dessert of aural textures, and the dude made it as a Valentine's Day gift for his girlfriend! And consider this: "Sleepyhead," which some people think of as the EP's standout (personally, we're partial to "Smile Upon Me," but we're going to make you buy it to see what we mean), was the only one he made special for this new upcoming record.
Like we said: something worth looking forward to.

Kid Sister - "Get Fresh"
Errbody get out of the way of fall's first hot new single!! It kind of makes sense that, a full year after XXXChange put this girl on the map with "Control," he and Kid Sis's beau would produce something that might make her a superstar. Instead of trying to make Kid Sister's verses fit between house and techno's punches, XXX and Trizzy made a trunk-rattler out of techno's keyboards, flipping ZZT and a synth that sounds like it belongs to William Orbit. "Get Fresh" might suggest that Dream Date is going to be a little schizophrenic, but if the rest is this good, nobody's going to care.

T*ttsworth featuring Kid Sister & Pase Rock - "WTF" (Nadastrom's On Drugs Remix)
Wow. A few weeks ago, we asked the people at Plant Music for permission to blog this baby out, and they said no. Which, frankly, didn't surprise us. This remix is about 6000% better than the original, with Dave Nada and Matt Nordstrom taking those very different a cappellas and giving them very different treatments. It probably would've come out kinda schizophrenic in the hands of lesser DJs, but instead this just sounds like that night you bought those pills without really asking what they were and you wound up going to five or six different clubs with that guy Francisco, who may or may not have borrowed your watch, and if you could only find your phone, you'd definitely send him a text message about it, but...

Genius is a funny thing sometimes. Hello My Name is DJ Falcon, the best EP Thomas Bangalter's label, Roule, ever pressed, is required listening for French touch enthusiasts. And this overwhelmingly soulful track, which became one of "Digital Love"'s unsung highlights (you'll see what we mean), is probably that EP's best track. Lemonade - "Big Weekend" (Hot Pink Delorean Remix)
Lemonade is on the up-and-up. Their self-titled debut album has everything from old, funky synthesizers to wobbly, wanton Arabian vocal melodies, and thanks to its mix of programmed and live drums, it's meant to be danced to all through the night. They're a sight to behold (the lower the venue's ceiling, the better), but this is more of an end of the night jam right here; Hot Pink Delorean hijacks the album's most straightforward vocals and puts them in an airy, blissful expanse where you can raise your hands towards the heavens. And as the trance-y drums and canned strings swell and build, you'll think you can actually reach them.

MIT - "Goodbook"
As you've probably noticed, percussion's come into vogue
in the last few years, practically ("More cowbell!") to the point of self-parody. The Ting Tings - "Shut Up and Let Me Go" (Classixx Remix)
When we first caught wind of this, our first guess was: ham-fisted big-room superclub bullshit. Turns out we were about as wrong as it's possible to be. The LA duo (who you'd better check out this Friday) changes the pitch and volume of Katie White's voice, and all of a sudden she sounds confused and lost instead of empowered. There was something so disarming and touching about it, we assumed it would never be topped, not least because the Hood Internet have few peers in the mash-up business. We've had kind of a love-hate relationship with Late of the Pier in the past year, when they were given too much credit for too little (we're standing by that, too). But if you sweep the hype away, they're just a band making their American debut during CMJ, and an intriguing one at that. They're playing at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 22, and we wish the Emperor Machine was coming along with them. MIT - "Park"
We're kind of breaking our own rules with this one, because we think blogs should leave young bands alone; the only way a young, new, promising band can bloom into a formidable one is through repetition, and working at something until they get completely sick of it, or buy into it all the way. German trio MIT aren't even old enough to buy beer in America, but they skew the sterile synth-pop and motorik traditions of their countrymen with ease, and if someone's going to build up enough buzz to get them into the United States, it might as well be us.

Roots Manuva - "Let the Spirit" (Hot Chip Remix [Radio Edit])
Well this is exciting. "Let the Spirit," from Roots Manuva's recently released Slime and Reason, was produced by none other than English pop-art-punks Metronomy, and its muted, quirky textures and well-arranged bleeps were a real revelation (those catchy MIDI horns didn't hurt either). And if the original's an understated anthem, Hot Chip decided to throw the "understated" part out the window with their remix. They pick up with that horn melody moving in the middle of a lonely guitar landscape, and before you can get your bearings, in comes the two-step, the yowling bass, and the burnt up synthesizers. This is just the radio edit, so just imagine what this sounds like stretched out. Let the spirit move you.

The Presets - "Anywhere" (Still Going Remix)
Talkaboutcher pleasant surprises: We were a little worried that the Presets might decide to offer up "Anywhere" to remixers. As Apocalypso's sexiest track (tellingly, it's also the loneliest), we were worried that the invited parties would use some ham-fisted approach and kill the mood. This isn't exactly new (we've been bumping it on the radio since last year), but we just couldn't resist, because this is probably one of the ten best rap remixes of all time. Shunda and Jwl of Yo Majesty, in their natural state, are sometimes hard to keep up with, especially in the face of all that ice-cold electro and booty music they usually rap over. But Swedish producer UMYO pulls off one serious white label coup here (Pr*nce + B-More = heaven). Nobody strikes a better balance between moody, slightly downcast emotion and steady forward momentum than Juan Maclean. If some of you were starting to wonder where all the European electro heads had gone, well, you can stop looking. Bastian Heerhorst (a.k.a. F#$&#@ Offf) is electro with that little bit of space menace thrown in to keep you raging that much longer. This is featured on the fast-rising Coco Machete label, which apparently has so much heat on the way that they can afford to give this away for free. Feel it.

The Chap - "Proper Rock"
The Chap is your new favorite band. They are experienced, original, European (this adds, we're told, a certain cache) and above all, terribly, terribly clever. But where certain bands (cough, Prinzhorn Dance School!, cough) stare at you coldly and dare you to laugh at their jokes, the Chap undercuts their dryness with the songwriters' equivalent of a noogie. Or maybe a wedgie. Proper songs about girls and clubbing, indeed.

Mr. Oizo - "Positif" (Bootleg)
Unbelievable. Normally, label heads and artists alike get really pissed off when highly anticipated albums get leaked almost two months in advance. But Pedro et al have been strangely quiet about the surfacing of two tracks off Lambs Anger. Which makes us think they planned it; it makes tons of sense that they'd release "Z," which is an odd little grower, and a bootleg of "Positif," a dark, out-of-tune little snarler that sics a synth loop, a vocal sample, and a scary bassline on you. Vous etes des animaux, indeed.

Pin Me Down - "Cryptic (Phones Materialisation Mix)"
We're sure all of you have continued to follow Kitsune's signings and releases obsessively since their 2006 heyday. So even though there's no reason we should even bother explaining that Pin Me Down is a side project for Bloc Party's Russell Lissack and his comely pal Millena Mepris, or that this is the best remix Paul Epworth has done in ages, or that the single containing this awesome track and its pals is available in both physical and digital formats...well, here's a heads-up.

ABX is just ridiculous. As one half of the most deadly mash-up duo in the universe (the Hood Internet), ABX goes beyond the everyday "hey, lookit!" gimmick of mash-ups, and actually pushes the pop envelope. Rollicking indie rock vs. princely hip hop clowning (the world-beating "Drug Drug Kiss Kiss," a combination of AC Newman's "Miracle Drug" and T-Pain and Chris Brown's "Kiss Kiss")? Check. Kevin Barnes is a freaking genius. After taking a man-sized risk and jumping off the E6 bandwagon (remember those earlier albums?) and landing on the dancefloor, the glittered frontman is moving full steam ahead, with a new album, Skeletal Lamping, promising more of that high-energy craziness.

{{Sunset}} - "Zombies"
Bill Baird must be some kind of great communicator. His band {{Sunset}} went from a one-man show to a sextet, and he still managed to keep a tight grip on the reins. Since you're going to demand proof of this claim, we're offering you "Zombies," a track that's as goofy as it is dark. Sandy says that time is running out / we've wasted all our time on amphetamines and doubt, goes one particularly memorable verse, as a mix of trombones, organ, beatboxing (!!), and steady drums marches slowly on, at a (we had to do it:) zombie-like pace.

Miss Kittin - "Grace" (Sleeparchive Remix)
People may have been ignoring them (we still think it's the cover art), but Caroline Herve (a.k.a. Miss Kittin)'s last two singles have been really sweet. That "Black Labelle" remix of "Kittin is High" is a towering monster, and this, the A-side of Kittin's last single, is one mysterious, static-y, dub beast. Tiga & Zyntherius - "Sunglasses at Night" (Alter Ego Remix [Instrumental])
Whaaaaaat...?! You can't be serious. Turbo's giving this track away?! We know that coverage of single and EP releases isn't quite what it should be, but we're shocked by how little attention the Sunglasses at Night EP has received. We've played most of the "Sunglasses at Night" remixes on the radido show, and to us, this is the gem of the whole release, an airy epic undercut by Roman Flugel and Joern Elling Wuttke's demented senses of humor (and bass). We refused to link you to this track out of respect, but if Tiga et al want to give away one of the coolest remixes of the year, well, we can't stop them.

Aussie pop nerds are sure to understand how intriguing this is. Empire of the Sun is a duo made up of members of PNAU and the Sleepy Jackson, and the intention here seems to be to play things straight. TV on the Radio - "DLZ"
Well, here it is. We've been hearing for years - years! - that album sales are down because the quality is down, because there hasn't been something worth shelling out money for. Friends, lovers, countrymen, in two weeks we're going to find out just how true those excuses really are. The new TV on the Radio album, Dear Science, is one of the best records to come out all year, driven by innovation and grandiosity as much as compelling melodies and songwriting. Here, on a track that (unfortunately) got leaked last week, the immaculately miked drums are sharp, the sense of dread and brooding is thick enough to cut with a knife, and Kyp Malone's voice is captivating.

Ladyhawke - "From Dusk til Dawn" (Linus Loves Remix)
This is just one of those matches made in heaven. Ladyhawke's got a pretty obvious thang for Stevie Nicks ("Back of the Van," anybody?), and on his last record, Linus Loves sampled two Miz Nicks to wonderful effect. For his part, Linus brings some rather, uh, Lifelike synths to the table, and pairs them with the lite funk guitar from the original. We're having trouble confirming if this is an "official" remix or not (it's legit to us), but if it isn't, well, shame on you, Modular. This is handily improves on the original, and you know it!
Yeah. You know it .

High Places - "From Stardust to Sentience"
Despite their tremendous start, the Brooklyn-based duo High Places is taking things slow.
Last year, they released a bubbling, cutesy collection of singles, each of which seemed to revel in youth and wonder. From the sound of things, their upcoming debut (coming out on Chicago-based Thrill Jockey) takes that wonderment onto a larger stage; an internationally-colored beat bumps and shakes through gentle gusts of string instrument samples as lead singer Mary Pearson marvels at where we came from.
They're still figuring their live show out, but come check them out for free at the East Village Radio festival tomorrow (Semptember 6). You won't be sorry.

Bjork featuring Antony Hegarty - "Dull Flame of Desire" (Modeselektor's Remix for Girls)
We probably should've alerted you to the existence of this remix a lot sooner. It's one of Volta's stronger tracks, after all, and a great crossover collaboration; it's easily the best context we've ever come across for Antony Hegarty's grand, sad voice. And Modeselektor, knowing their audiences the way they do, figured the smart thing to do would be to please everybody with two remixes. The "Boys" version is, understandably, a little heavier, with sliced up vocals and that weird robo-space-reggae sound they've been honing for the past few years. But the "Girls" version is an entirely different animal: thinner, with a muted, constant drum kick complemented by unobtrusive breaks, the soaring duet plays out in a field of dampened, epic chords. It's a real showstopper, a perfect accompaniment to everything from a climactic kiss to fireworks. Maybe even both.

Holy crap. So, we have absolutely no idea who this BreYthing Ape character is. After some initial digging, it's starting to look like he's some dude from Norf London, and he may or may not have something to do with We Do It Right, the internet magazine that we found this on. Simian Mobile Disco - "Love" (Beyond the Wizard's Sleeve Remix)
Every time we think we're completely sick of the wankery of beardo disco, with its would-be psych hooey and endless, pointless expanses (and that's before we even get into the limpdick New Age melodies, Lindstrom), we just put on a remix by Beyond the Wizard's Sleeve. Resident Advisor Mix: Still Music's Jerome Derradji
Pardon us for a second while we alert you to a really, really cool label. You might not have heard of Still Music, Past Due, or Stilove4music, but Jerome Derradji runs all of them out of Chicago. Derradji's main commitment is to bringing together all the current strands of music that developed out of soul and disco, and tying them back together, and his operation is so far past the lip service paid to rescuing and hailing the past that it can make most other dance music seem kind of silly. Here, on a mix Derradji did for online dance music hub Resident Advisor, the finest members of Derradji's stable lovingly bring you edits and reworkings of classics by Brass Construction, Loleatta Holloway, D-Train, and more. This mother's an hour long, so it requires a bit of a commitment, but if you love music as much as Derradji does, you'll understand.

Late of the Pier - "Heartbeats" (Hot Chip Remix)
Late of the Pier would do well to take some cues from Hot Chip. While Late of the Pier are interested in making rock music that's more discordant, Hot Chip was also proud of its weird streak. They still are, but they've done a remarkable job of melding it to a sound fit for mass consumption. Here, they take hold of Late of the Pier's best song, and turn it into something that clonks and shakes, then slurs and screams over synths before resuming its dance for itself. Chemical Brothers feat. Spank Rock - "Keep My Composure"
Back when the Chems released "Galvanize" with Q-Tip a few years ago, it was so poppy that people managed to ignore the fact that it's done more to shape current dance and pop music than all but a handful of tracks. Next came "The Salmon Dance" with Fatlip, which got blown out of the water by the remix Crookers made. And now, with the world all a-twitter over the imminent mainstream revival of hip house (or maybe it's started already), here comes the most anticipated one yet. In a way, it's both safer than the aforementioned tracks and a lot grittier, and it's compelling for the simple fact that it's one of the most honest tracks Naeem's done in almost a year. Yessssss!

Lykke Li - "I'm Good, I'm Gone" (Black Kids Remix)
When we first came across this, our eyes rolled. "Aw jeez, not another band trying to stay hip with the kids these days!" we mumbled. Aside from Cut Copy and maybe CSS, we basically think that bands should have to apply for Remixers Licenses, and even though we're still in favor of the idea, we're pretty confident Black Kids will ace the entrance exam. The vocals on "I'm Good, I'm Gone" are pretty simple (and pretty malleable), so the Jacksonville band takes them for a dancing spin through the NME's 80's, saying hello to New Order and the Pet Shop Boys along the way. Color us incredibly surprised by this one.

It emphasizes texture and sound design, and here, in a mix he recorded live back in 2004, you can hear the beginnings of what you heard last night (Thursday, July 24). You're welcome.

R.E.M. - "Man-Sized Wreath" (Peter Makebish and Jen Turner Remix)
We originally posted this remix a few weeks ago without giving any thought to what label R.E.M. is signed to. And we'd barely finished leaning back in our chairs when the lights went out, our office door blew open, and we were being dragged into a van by Warner Brothers' ninja-lawyers. After fighting bravely on a precipice overlooking the Cloisters (read: sloppily, pathetically begging them not to sue us), these proud warriors decided we had earned their respect, and they've let us post it for you again, for real this time.
Enjoy it.

Booka Shade - "Charlotte"
As we've been saying for the last few years, Booka Shade makes music that's as busy as it is welcoming. We said it about their superior full-length Movements, we said it about their super-fun installment in the DJ-Kicks! series, and frankly, at this point we're running out of ways to say it. Kid Color - "Phoenix B-O-O-T-A-Y" (Daft Punk vs. Bangers and Cash)
Kid Color is another one of these Internet mash-up/remix/intellectual property pirates that we bump on the radio show all the time, and even though both of this track's parts are kind of on the old side, we couldn't really resist. It's a successful proof of our favorite mathematical theorem:
Cool song + Cool song = really cool dance track.

Metronomy - "Holiday"
As post-punk scuttles back to weirder ground in England, there are scores of bands trying (These New Puritans) and failing (Late of the Pier) to prove they don't need pop sense to make it on the big stage. It reeks of adolescent reaction, and it's the kind of thing that you generally need more experience to pull off. Enter Metronomy, who show us that you can include demented melodies and zonked out metallic percussion and still keep your balance.
...Thank God.

We've been waiting for Sebastien Tellier's record to come out for quite a while, and finally (mercifully, even), Sexuality will be released....at American Apparel. Whatever. Next Tuesday is next Tuesday, and a Boys Noize remix is always something to look forward to. Yaz vs. Foreigner - "Urgent Situation" (DJ Lobsterdust Mash)
Well, we figure that now's a good time to let you all know about Bootie USA. Started by Adrian and the Mysterious D (a.k.a. A Plus D) in San Francisco, the Bootie empire now extends far and wide, with parties across the coasts (San Fran and LA to New York and Boston) and also across the pond (Paris and London). Mash-ups are their game, and their blog has, if you'll pardon the expression, a whole f*ck-ton of them available for free. And since we've got Yaz's afterparty this week, crush on this when you get the chance. It's about a third of the way down, and while you could just hit ctrl+F to get right there, we think it's better for you to have a look around first. Fill your hard drives!!

Rainbow Arabia - "Omar K"
Man, this is starting to get really interesting. In the last few months, there's been a bizarre uptick in the amount of Arab-influenced indie music coming out. Duke Dumont's "Hoy," Nadastrom's remix of "A Milli," and now (or, well, soon), an entire EP of the stuff courtesy of Rainbow Arabia, a West Coast duo that floats Arabian melisma and haze over their strident synth mashes. This is self-released, so hit them where it counts.

Lil' Wayne - "A Milli" (Nadastrom Remix)
We had a feeling that "A Milli" was going to be one of those untouchable tracks of the year; its original form is so pure, and there's no way you can take Weezy's vocals and lay them over something that will top Bangladesh's beat. Which is way Nadastrom didn't do that; Wayne's vocals are so pitched down here that he sounds like Satan, and it doesn't help that they surrounded him by what we imagine they play in Hell on a Saturday night. Or so we hope. Immediate contender for Best Unofficial Remix of the Year. Believe it.

Paper Route Gangstaz vs. M83 - "Rollin" (DJ Ayres Blend)
DJ Ayres has always been one of the smartest guys in the room. And when it comes to his blends, there might not be a better guy in the business. Take this, for example. M83's "Couleurs" is a neverending chasm of synths that, on its own, kind of lacks something. So naturally, Ayres goes right ahead and grabs the year's best drug song, a track that made Diplo believe in a bunch of nobodies from Huntsville, Alabama. A song about ecstasy floating over a narcotic, slightly empty synth paradise? We told you the dude was smart...

Madonna - "Get Into the Groove" (Sidechains Remix)
The way this normally works is pretty simple. We write a little something about the artist, a little something about the song, and then we urge you to download said song. But we feel like we'd be denying you the real pleasure here if we did that this time. See, this remix is part of Rewind, a gargantuan remix/covers project headed by a DJ duo called Buffet Libre. These two saints accumulated 59 (!!!) altered 80's classics, and decided, out of the goodness of their hearts, to give the whole kit n kaboodle away for nothing. They're not all heaters (check the Cloud Room's bizarro cover of "Blue Monday"), but each offers its own kind of freshness. Run (don't walk!) here for the whole thing...Oh yeah, and...

Deadmau5 - "Alone With You"
Dance music gets subjected to double standards all the time, and normally, we're okay with that; 99 times out of 100, it's not supposed to be high art. But when it quietly manages to score among pop's upper percentiles, it usually gets short shrift. Take "Alone With You," for example. It's got a deliciously open-ended melody, the kind of thing that can build you up, make you smile to yourself, hope for the best while staying cautious. And with a smooth driving beat behind it, "Alone With You" does all three. And yet, pop nerds don't know. That's okay, they can thank us later.
Oh, and
DJs beware: 96kbps only. Go buy that sh*t, son!

Deadmau5 - "Duo Cad Sordit"
Generally speaking, we're not the biggest fans of teasing. People will get fed up if you play games with them too often, and that's just not our style, but we figure it's justified here, because we're giving you a teaser of a teaser. Deadmau5's "Duo Cad Sordit" is the first teaser, a nearly tribal slow-builder with well-mixed congas colored by deep space sunrises. Eventually, some agonized, swollen synths show up, but they never give you the release. It's the kind of thing that will leave a dancefloor in blissful agony, but at only 96kpbs, you can only guess at its true power. Come out next week for the real thing.

Gregor Tresher - "Black Rain" (Gregor Tresher Remix)
We were glad to give you that Gregor Tresher freebie last week, as it's a great example of how well Tresher's fused the melodic and colorful sides of techno, house, and minimal. But something nagged at us. We didn't give you something that had a real beat to it. And after all, it's not like the man has no interest in percussion. Exhibit A awaits you here; the man himself takes the opening track off his much-lauded A Thousand Nights album and turns off all the lights, leaving you with only a steady beat and an engrossing collection of blips, ticks, and hisses to guide you. Get excited: he's coming next Thursday.

Wow. How does Yo Majesty get left out of URB's Girls of Summer feature? We're literally confounded by this. Sure, Domino's not releasing their album for a bit, but c'mon. They had a guest slot on Stainless Style, and their a cappellas are still getting plenty of love from the remixers crowd. Goon & Koyote - "Keep Dancin"
France's fascination with the music of the booty extends back over decades; just ask DJ Slugo and DJ Assault what the Dollar-Euro exchange rate is, and they can probably tell you off the top of their head. But it's not all imported. Goon & Koyote are booty house and ghetto-tech aficionados, and they approach their craft with just the right balance of reverence and whimsy. We were in the middle of preparing notes for an obituary ("Death of the Decent Bass Players") when this track popped up on our radar screens. Kris Menace deserves some kind of medal for discovering this guy. "This Boy's in Love" is epic and thrilling in its original form, and on his remix, Lifelike preserves that spirit while transforming its features. Gorgeous.

Plantlife - "Lovetoy"
With the sun out, we can't help but let our minds wander into the soul and funk territories. Hence the Sharon Jones up above, and hence this, a smidgen of the new Plantlife record. Dude is a highly sought-after producer from Miami who puts r&b's golden ages up on the same pedestal, with both Prince and George Clinton being honored here. Feel the warmth.

Crookers May Mix
Strange how life works sometimes. We got this in our mailbox from another DJ's manager, and it's a super-pleasant surprise. We privately wondered whether Crookers would be too much on the decks, but this shows it's quite the opposite. Turns out they're just crazy good.

Steinski - "Voicemail"
When you think of hip hop's pioneers, you tend to think of just about everybody but Steve Stein, a.k.a. Steinski. But Steinski's "The Lessons" inspired everybody from DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist to Fatboy Slim, and expanded the genre's parameters in ways that are still being felt today. He's got a retrospective coming out next week, and this track, a quirky, compelling collage of Sugar Hill highlights, is a free taste. Come get it.

Chemical Brothers - "The Salmon Dance" (Crookers "Wow" Mix)
Saturday is going to be a lu lu. We've been trying to get Crookers over here to do one of our parties for, well, it feels like forever, and this is the week that the deal goes down. To put this in perspective for you all, here's the track that convinced us we had to bring them over here. PHRA and Bot take one of the Chemical Brothers' weirdest songs and turn it into a maniacal stomper.

Daedelus is a machine. Not four months after the L.A.-based beat wizard released his smarter-than-you live album (Live at Low End Theory), the man is back with a live project (Fire Magic Blood) and a new record on Ninja Tune. They won't let us website types anywhere near the originals, but this XXXChange remix augurs well.

Junkie XL - "Cities in Dust" (The Glimmers Remix)
God knows we love the way rock's infested dance music. On the indie side, there's the DFA gospel we love so much, and on the electro side, there's people like MSTRKRFT, L.A. Riots, Justice, and Bloody Beetroots. Everybody in the latter camp owes a debt to Junkie XL, who's been adding a rock music whomp to his dance music for almost a decade. We've got him this Thursday, and you'd better be ready.

Peanut Butter Wolf and James Pants Fabric Podcast
Most label bosses don't bring their interns with them for podcasts, but Peanut Butter Wolf does. Granted, James Pants is now part of Wolf's stable - his debut album comes out next week - but Pants started out as a Stones Throw intern, and here they are, doing the Fabric podcast together. Feel good story of the year, with a sweet electrofunk soundtrack.

Chin Chin - "Appetite"
To hear the band tell it, Chin Chin never planned to become fancy-pants recording artists. They started out as a house party band, and it sounds like they barely managed to stay serious long enough to commit their debut album to tape. Good for them, and good for you.
